Cotton Textile Industry in India

Have you ever thought about where the clothes you wear come from? Cotton is the most important raw material used in the textile industry. Cotton is converted to cloth and this cloth material is used to make dresses, T-shirts, curtains and many other things which we use in our daily life. Let us look into the process that are involved in the making of a cotton cloth. First cotton bolls are plucked from cotton plants. They are cleaned and then supplied to the textile industry in large quantities. The cotton is then used to make threads. The threads, produced in large quantities, are fitted in the weaving machines. Weaving is the most basic process in which two different sets of yarns or threads are interlaced with each other to form a fabric or cloth. Modern weaving machines make the cloth at a very fast pace. It reduces cost and time. Now you know that cotton is the main raw material used in textile industries. (pause for 3 sec). Can you name a few more raw materials used in other large-scale industries? Court rejects claim to Matisse owned by National Gallery

Matisse In a unanimous ruling on Monday (10 September), the Second Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a lower-court decision that the National Gallery and Britain were immune from the jurisdiction of US courts because the lawsuit did not meet the conditions set by the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act. “The alleged taking of the painting was committed by a private actor” not “a sovereign”, the panel of judges said. “The National Gallery’s refusal to compensate appellants for that taking after the fact does not provide a basis for jurisdiction over a foreign sovereign and its instrumentality.” The appeals court therefore backed the district court’s decision to dismiss based on a “lack of subject matter jurisdiction”. The painting was originally purchased from Matisse by Oskar Moll, the husband of Margarete Moll, also known as Greta, the woman portrayed in the painting, and taken to Germany. The couple were living in Berlin in 1946 when, fearing the upheaval of the postwar partition of the city, they decided to send the portrait abroad to protect it from looting. Oskar Moll died in 1947, and Margarete Moll entrusted the painting to a former student of his who promised to take it to Switzerland for safekeeping. Upon arriving there, however, the onetime student sold it instead and kept the proceeds. Margarete Moll moved to Wales, and the painting then went through a series of owners, including the New York gallery Knoedler & Co and the Lefevre Gallery of London, before its purchase by the National Gallery in 1979. According to court documents, the three grandchildren—Oliver Williams, Margarete Green and Iris Filmer—first pressed their case for the painting’s recovery in 2011, but the National Gallery declined to return it.

The tremors in Mpape began on the afternoon of the previous day and continued till around midnight, according to newspaper reports. Residents described goods toppling off the shelves in their shops and fearing that the ceilings in their homes would cave in. Many assumed that their buildings were about to collapse. Barely two weeks earlier, the collapse of an incomplete building in the Jabi area of Abuja made news headlines. The scene of the disaster, in a modern neighbourhood with some upmarket estates, attracted a visit from Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo. Saudi Arabia hatch BIZARRE plot to turn rivals Qatar into ISLAND with HUGE canal Saudi Arabia hatch BIZARRE plot to turn rivals Qatar into ISLAND with HUGE canal A SENIOR Saudi official appeared to confirm local media reports the kingdom is considering digging a canal to separate the Qatari peninsula from the mainland and turn it into an island, amid a year-long dispute between the neighbours. Saud al-Qahtani, a senior adviser to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, appeared to confirm the bizarre project on Twitter. He said: “As a citizen, I am impatiently waiting for the details of the implementation of the East Salwa island project. “This great historic project will change the region’s geography.” Reports about the canal first emerged on Sabq, a news website close to the government in April. Unnamed sources described Saudi plans to build a military base and a nuclear waste dump beside a 60 kilometre (37 mile) channel measuring 200 metres wide and 20 metres deep and stretching across the entire border with Qatar. The cost was estimated at 2.8 billion riyals ($747 million). Further reports in the newspaper Makkah in June said Riyadh was moving ahead with the plans. Five unnamed companies invited to bid on the project and a winner to be announced in September. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (Image: GETTY) Qahtani has mentioned the project on Twitter over the past few months, but Friday’s tweet was the clearest reference yet to an initiative which critics dismiss as a public relations tactic aimed at intimidating Qatar rather than a serious plan. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt cut diplomatic, trade and transport ties with Qatar in June 2017, accusing it of supporting terrorism.

SANA news agency reported the Technical Industry Institution in the state-controlled city of Latakia had been targeted. They added that it was not immediately known who fired the missiles. Russian radars also registered the launch of missiles from a French frigate Auvergne. However, a US official with knowledge of the attack, dismissed Russia’s claims and told CNN the maritime patrol aircraft was actually inadvertently shot down by the Syrian regime. The Israeli military refused to comment on claims they were behind the attack on Syria. The attack in Latakia comes only a day after the leaders of Russia and Turkey agreed to establish a demilitarised zone in the Syrian province of Idlib, the last major enclave held by rebels opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The zone will be established before October 15 and will be 9-12 miles deep. How one newspaper is helping kids during a teen suicide epidemic

The Deseret News hosts a screening of  the film Many local citizens and passing visitors alike had tragically fallen from the cliff to the valley below. Some of the citizens in the town advocated for putting a fence around the cliff, but others more persuasively made the case for simply parking an ambulance down below in the valley. So the citizens relied on the ambulance to deal with the ever-present and potentially lethal problem, repairing the results instead of preventing the cause. As it relates to our suicide and opioid cliff, communities have added many new tools to the ambulance down in the valley, including vital overdose reversing injections, needle exchanges, counseling, and rehabilitation programs for those who have become addicted. But we have done far too little to build the fence at the top of the cliff.  Millions of youths struggle with anxiety — the keep-you-up, leave-you-immobile variety. Since January, Deseret News reporters have talked with dozens of experts and teens about it. Here’s what we’ve found. https://t.co/IVhsLJ8AQQ — Deseret News (@DeseretNews) July 1, 2018 Interventions and solutions relating to teen suicide have proven elusive for many families and communities. “Generation Vexed” is our attempt to build those fences in our own community, and the series has already had a transformational impact on individual teens in our state.  The Deseret News will continue to be a local and national voice on youth suicide prevention because it is our responsibility as solutions-driven journalists to lead, shape, foster, and highlight critical conversations on issues that matter.

Hong Kong and Beijing officials have justified the unusual arrangement as a one-off, while touting its logistical and economic benefits. But critics say the railway is a symbol of continuing Chinese assimilation of Hong Kong, which returned to Chinese rule in 1997 with guarantees of widespread autonomy and freedoms not enjoyed on the mainland, including an independent legal system. “I worry that Hong Kong will no longer be Hong Kong,” said Martin Lee, a veteran democrat and barrister who is fighting to derail the project in the city’s courts. He said Hong Kong risked losing its allure as a financial hub underpinned by strong rule of law, as Beijing steps up a push to fuse the city into a vast hinterland of the Pearl River Delta including nine Chinese cities dubbed the Greater Bay Area. Several other infrastructure projects will open this year including a $20 billion sea bridge to Macau and Zhuhai, while Beijing is now working with Chinese tech giant Tencent to let people replace their travel documents by using a mobile phone WeChat app to cross the border in future. “Hong Kong will be completely submerged into the Greater Bay, and we don’t know what it’s going to be like,” said the 80-year-old Lee, who helped found the city’s Democratic Party. “That’s the worrying thing. Hong Kong is going to be put like a little ant into a box.” In recent years, especially since mass pro-democracy protests in 2014 that ended with no concessions from the government, Beijing has struggled to win hearts and minds, especially among those youths who reject any notion of being part of mainland China and have chafed at perceived meddling in Hong Kong’s affairs. As protesters demanded greater freedoms amid some talk of splitting Hong Kong from China, Beijing tightened its grip, jailing some young protest leaders, forcing others to flee and taking the wind out of the democracy movement’s sails.

REUTERS/Petar Kujundzic/File Photo Nur Bekri is one of China’s most senior Uighur officials and a former governor of the restive region of Xinjiang. He also serves as a deputy head of China’s state planning agency, the National Development and Reform Commission. The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection announced the investigation in a brief posting on its website. It did not provide details of the alleged transgressions other than to describe them as “serious disciplinary and legal violations”, a routinely used euphemism for corruption. President Xi Jinping has targeted the energy sector as part of a wider campaign to weed out pervasive graft that began when he came into office six years ago. A deputy head of the energy administration was sacked and placed under investigation in 2014. Nur Bekri was the chairman of Xinjiang, home to the Uighurs in China’s far west, from 2008 until 2014, a time that saw bouts of ethnic violence that included deadly rioting in 2009. Reports of mass detentions of ethnic Uighurs and other ethnic Muslims in Xinjiang in recent months have sparked a growing international outcry.

If 40 of May’s 315 lawmakers and the opposition parties voted against a Brexit deal based on her proposals, she would fall short of the number needed to pass the legislation. This would increase the likelihood that Britain would face leaving the EU without an agreement and of a general election or even a second referendum. “Every group in any political party has differences, egos and so on,” Davis said. “But with Labour voting against, the critical size of the voting bloc is quite small, it’s basically a dozen people.

Vatican reps will travel to China to finalize agreement, newspaper reports

Vatican reps will travel to China to finalize agreement, newspaper reports Beijing considers Taiwan to be a renegade Chinese province. In previous negotiations, China has insisted that the Vatican cut its ties with Taiwan and promise not to interfere with internal Chinese affairs in order to come to an agreement. It is estimated that there are about 12 million Catholics currently living in China, half within official state churches in the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association and the rest in the “underground Church.” The Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association is under the day-to-day direct supervision of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) due to a major change in March 2018 in which the Chinese government shifted direct control of religious affairs to the Chinese Communist Party’s United Front Work Department (UFWD). Some of the bishops appointed by the Chinese government in the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association also serve as members of the Chinese Communist Party’s National People’s Congress. “We, as citizens of the country, should first be a citizen and then have religion and beliefs,” Bishop Peter Fang Jianping of Tangshan told Chinese media after he voted to eliminate presidential term limits for President Xi Jinping in March 2018. Fang was ordained a bishop in Beijing in 2000 without Vatican approval and then legitimized by the Holy See two years later. Xi has promoted a campaign of “Sinicization” of all religion in China, “a far-reaching strategy to control, govern, and manipulate all aspects of faith into a socialist mold infused with ‘Chinese characteristics,’” according to the U.S. Commission for International Religious Freedom 2018 report. New regulations on religious practice in China went into effect in February 2018 that codify the increased scrutiny and pressure on religious activities in China. On September 10, the Chinese government placed further restrictions on evangelization, making it illegal for any religious prayers, catechesis or preaching to be published online.

President Donald Trump has accused America’s trading partners of hurting economic growth in the United States through unfair practices. But the paper tariffs are also unusual because they were advocated by one small company in Washington state called Northern Pacific Paper, or Norpac. The company employs a few hundred workers and is owned by One Rock Capital, a private equity firm in New York. After the Commerce Department finalized its tariffs earlier this month, Norpac praised the decision and urged the International Trade Commission to make the duties permanent. CEO Craig Anneberg said in a statement at the time that the tariffs allowed Norpac to restart an idled paper machine and hire 60 workers, with another 40 jobs to fill. A Norpac spokesman said the company expected to have more to say once the commission votes Wednesday. The company has previously said that it simply wants to compete on “a level playing field” with Canadian paper producers. Opponents of the tariffs claim that protecting Norpac puts the jobs of more than 600,000 Americans working in paper, newsprint and publishing at risk. Newspaper publishers and industry groups have been supported by dozens of members of Congress, including 19 who testified before the International Trade Commission last month to push for the reversal of the tariffs. Some of those lawmakers are also looking at other ways to find relief for the industry. Senator Susan Collins , a Republican from Maine, introduced a bill in May that would suspend the tariffs while the Commerce Department studies the economic well-being of the US newsprint and publishing industries.

In Turkey’s snap parliamentary election in June, Berberoglu was re-elected to parliament from behind bars. The court of appeals was not immediately available for comment. The opposition Cumhuriyet daily published its original report about the alleged weapons shipment to Syria based on a video that allegedly came from Berberoglu. Two of the newspaper’s journalists, Can Dundar and Erdem Gul, were sentenced to at least five years in jail over the report, but were later released pending an appeal process.
